Common Treatments (The Never Ending Cycle)

Dog has a visible cream-to-dark waxy, odiferous discharge. Vet performs ear exam and will generally prescribe an antibiotic & an ear cleaning solution.

The antibiotic is to treat a bacterial infection. As the bacteria decreases, moisture & inflammation causes the ear canal to become a breeding ground for a yeast infection.

The yeast infection causes an odor and discharge.

The vet may then perform additional tests, including cultures, radiography, allergy tests, etc.

Further treatment may then include special foods, additional medicines, daily cleanings of the ears, etc.

Pet owners often end up spending hundreds of dollars treating ear conditions that never really get fully under control.
